Why Visit Phillip Island

Join Phillip Island Penguin Tours and get amongst the Aussie animals! Head south of Melbourne to Phillip Island and enjoy a guided ranger tour at the Phillip Island Koala Reserve, walk the wild surf beaches, see kangaroos and wallabies in the wild and finish the day with the Penguin Parade.

Itinerary

140km southeast of Melbourne, Phillip Island has a population of over 7,000 people and more than 100 different species of animals. Although small, this island is packed with scenic beauty and significant scientific, historical and archaeological sites.

Phillip Island’s Koala Reserve

1 hour 45 minutes drive to Phillip Island. Once you arrive, a Ranger from Phillip Island Nature Parks will take you on a walk through the Koala Reserve. You will receive a talk about koalas, the history of the reserve and the last remaining natural bush on the island.
You will receive an informative talk about koalas, the reserve’s history and the last remaining natural woodland on the island.

Learn about the History and Aboriginal Culture of Phillip Island

Phillip Island has been a popular fishing spot and foraging for the Yalloc Bulluck, one of the largest clans of the Bunurong people, for thousands of years. These first Australians would come to the island during summer and the ‘egging season’. The abundance of native wildlife is evident as to why this area was so special. Today, you can still see signs of Yalloc Bulluk’s foraging activities at the Penguin Parade and Summerlands National Park. Phillip Island Nature Parks is working to increase visitor awareness and protect these culturally significant sites.

The Nobbies Phillip Island Nature Park

As you enter Summerlands, there is no housing; this is all National Park. Here, you will see small wooden burrows where Little Penguins that haven’t gone out to fish are hiding. We’ll walk along the boardwalks at ‘The Nobbies’ and see if we can spot any Little Penguins in their homes. Continue along the pathways to ‘The Blowhole’, where the waves crash against the dark volcanic rock. The rugged caves and formations of this peninsula are great for photos, especially against the backdrop of Seal Rocks. On a clear day, you might even see the Australian colony of Fur Seals basking in the sun. If you don’t want to walk the boardwalks, the Nobbies Information Centre is a nice place to rest. Here, you can browse the gift shop, have a hot drink or explore the ‘Antarctic Journey’. Entry to the Antarctic Journey is $18 per person and gives you an insight into the marine life of the Southern Hemisphere. As a WWF attraction your admission fee goes directly towards the conservation of these amazing creatures of the deep Southern Ocean.

Off-Road Wildlife Coastal Drive

Leaving the Nobbies we head off road, with incredible views and Wallabies along the way. Your guided tour will get you excited as we wait for the wild Little Penguins to appear and learn about their habits and characteristics. Did you know they have over 3000 feathers?

The Phillip Island Tour Penguin Parade

As the sun sets, it’s time to head to the Penguin Parade. The Little Penguins wait until dark to come out of the water so they don’t attract aerial predators. From this point on, the Penguin Parade asks for no photography. We support this rule as we think you’ll enjoy the beautiful experience without the distraction of getting the perfect photo – let yourself be totally immersed in the moment! If you’re also thinking of doing the Great Ocean Road, you can combine both for an overnight trip with our 2-day Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island Tour. Sit back, relax and let us do the planning and driving for you.
