Australian fur seals

The world’s most enormous fur seals may be seen at Seal Rocks, a few km from Nobby’s. Their preference for rocky shores may be identified by the brown hair that covers their body. For this reason, Australian fur seals find Seal Rocks to be an excellent breeding location. Seals are nimble and skilled hunters who hunt by swimming in the water. Although they are known to catch squid and octopus, their primary food source is bony fish. Seals walk around on land and raise their bodies with their front flippers. The size and black hair on top of the head can be used to identify males and girls. Due to the large number of hunters who killed seals for their fur coats in the 1800s, the population of Australian fur seals decreased. The population dropped from hundreds of thousands to 20,000. Still, in the last several years, Parks Victoria and other government organisations have implemented conservation measures that have led to a steady revival in the population.

Local Penguin Parade

After another 5 minutes of strolling, you’ll arrive at Summerland Beach, which hosts a penguin parade every evening. This is Phillip Island’s most famous attraction, as tiny penguins come ashore to nest and nurture their young. Phillip Island has a colony of over 32,000 spotted fairy penguins. However, they spend over 80% of their time at sea hunting for food. Over a million fairy penguins stay in Australia’s Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, and Western Australia.

The Nobbies Centre is an excellent example of Australia’s natural beauty, with endless views and plenty of animals to be experienced.

Wildlife Watching

Of course, seeing the beautiful creatures is the best thing to do in Nobbie. Plenty of wildlife to see, including tiny penguins, Australia’s largest fur seal colony, and silver gulls looking for their young in the spring. Birdwatching on Phillip Island and the Bass Coast is also quite popular, with the yearly migration of mutant birds and pelicans from Alaska. Churchill Island is one of the many places on Phillip Island where you can get up close and personal with wildlife. Just one bridge connects this island, situated on Victoria’s oldest European farm, to Phillip Island. Known as a cultural heritage spot, this thriving farm is home to Highland cattle, sheepdogs, and horses.
